Sexual assault cases are complex by nature and even more so when the victim is a child. A victim’s disclosure about sexual abuse is often used as evidence in prosecutions. When the content of this disclosure changes or is withdrawn it can impact the litigation landscape in the case. While recanting occurs in all types of cases, common influences include internal, external, societal, and socio-cultural factors. This workshop will help participants understand the nature of recanting, how to navigate recanting witnesses, and advantages and/or disadvantages that exist to witness recantations.
